When Aaron and I hiked Spruce Knob, we had plans to also hike Chimney Top and explore Bear Rocks Preserve. Since the weather was cold and windy, we decided to postpone that trip and plan it for another time. I saw the weather was going to be beautiful for a few days and since we bought another property, I knew we were not going to have much time for activities (more to come on our new property).
Chimney Top was a recommendation from someone at work. They said the hike is hard, but totally worth it, and yes they were accurate. The hike is almost 6 miles and I would rate it as hard because of the incline the entire hike. If you look at All Trails, you'll see that the hike is straight up on the map. The terrain for the first half is easy to navigate, but the roots and trees do start to take over during the second half. Thankfully you start to see overlooks at the halfway point.
When we saw the overlooks, I could see that Aaron was thinking that was all there was to see. A few hikers coming down said, "It's worth it!". That motivated both of us. When we got to the top, we realized, they were right.
The rocks at Chimney Top were just so different and oddly shaped!
The ridge of all the trees was beautiful!
People were climbing on a few of the rock formations, which Aaron was not ready for, but I was impressed with how close to the edge he got!
After enjoying the views and having a sandwich, we headed down.
We booked an Airbnb for the night at Loves Way Village in Petersburg, WV. You can find it here https://abnb.me/rR7N1ho7Vub.
It was such a cute little place and when I saw it online I knew it would be perfect!
Once we unpacked our things, we headed to Cheetah B's for dinner. At Loves Way Village, you can order uncooked meals to cook yourself at the grills provided. We thought about it, but after hiking 6 miles we figured we would rather have someone else cook our meal. Cheetah B's was the only place open and the food was great!
When we finished eating, we took dessert to go and headed back to our hot tub!
The next morning we headed out to Bear Rocks Preserve for sunrise. I was surprised to find that the road to get here is an unpaved, gravel, and narrow road. Well, I guess I should just assume all the roads are here since we continually run into this. Plan to leave a little earlier so you can sit down to see the sunrise.
The sunrise here is beautiful and Bear Rocks Preserve is a very well known place in West Virginia for the sunrises!
The drive down was gorgeous too!
We drove back to Fairmont after this and went to McAteer's Restaurant. This is located right across from our hospital and we have heard great things. We both were happy with our meals and we recommend a table chocolate chip pancake to share!
After getting up early to catch the sunrise, our 2.5 hour drive home, and a full belly, we were ready for a nap! Keep checking back for more travels and our renovation project.
