Lindy Point and Spruce Knob

With Fall foliage in full effect, I couldn't help myself but to plan as much as possible for the month of October. We really wanted to do a backpacking trip and I saw Spruce Knob via the Huckleberry trail was highly rated. Once I realized that you could drive to Spruce Knob, I quickly changed my mind since Aaron would not be happy to see a parking lot at the end of a 5 mile hike. Instead we planned a quick trip with a small amount of backpacking (our packs really just made going to the campsite easier).

Our first stop was Lindy Point. I saw pictures of this and it looked amazing. It is practically a walk, but there is limited parking at the trailhead. It is located in Blackwater State Park and takes maybe 20 minutes.

On the way there, we took a few pictures.

The trail was muddy so we did wear hiking shoes. If it wasn't muddy you could easily do this hike in sneakers.

The view at the end was beautiful!

After that we drove out of the park.

Aaron asked me, "Did we bring any beers with us?". So we stopped at Stumptown Ales to pick up a 6-pack and have a beer. We also stopped in Davis to visit The Davis Depot. We had forgotten our supplies for cooking! This store was the only hiking store on the drive and they had exactly what we needed, and cool stickers, and cool jackets. Definitely recommend!

Then we started our drive to Spruce Knob. I wanted to get there before sun down, but we didn't make it in time. Below is a picture of Seneca Rocks which we hiked when we first arrived in West Virginia.

We did catch a small glimpse of the sunset at the top of Spruce Knob. Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia and is 4,863 feet in elevation.

Once we parked it was extremely dark and we had no cell service. We drove around to find the beginning of the Huckleberry trail and once we found it, it was a 20 foot walk to a few open areas to pitch our tent. As I set up the inside of the tent, Aaron cooked dinner.

That night was cold! Possibly one of our coldest nights in the tent. No bears or deer this time though. In the morning once we packed up our site, we walked out to the overlook. This trail is very easy and maybe half a mile at most.

We both were wishing it was a bit warmer, but still worth the view. After that we headed down the mountain to Gateway Restaurant for breakfast.

Our original plan was to do a bigger hike that day, but the weather was not on our side, so we planned it for another time. We are so glad we were able to make this little trip work and use our backpacking gear!
